Pléneuf-Val-André is a city of Brittany in Côtes-d'Armor.

Understand

Le Val-André is the seaside resort proper, created at the end of the 19th century.e century by the progressive construction of villas along a beach of 2,5 km ; the main street of equal length extending about fifty meters behind the dike-promenade and welcoming in its middle part many shops, a casino operating games, bars and restaurant, theater and cinema, a large chapel (Chapel Notre-Dame created by the nuns of Saint-Quay in 1890), as well as numerous tennis courts in the Admiralty Park (2 ha).

According to Jules Herbert, the coastal zone was in 1860 devoid of any habitation. Admiral Charner had just bought a first piece of land in 1853, but it is to Charles Cotard that the creation of the Val-André is attributed by the purchase for this purpose the of a large part of the dunes and wetlands by the sea. A first parallel route is opened in the dunes. The construction of villas has long been encouraged by very reasonable prices; three francs per m² in 1896!

This first operation was limited to the south, the land acquired stopping at the level of the current rue des Mouettes. The development of a second section took over from Charles Cotard's initiative, extending it harmoniously to the more rugged terrain at the Murs Blancs level. The construction in 1894-1895 of the Grand Hotel, aptly named, is the notable element of this second phase.
