Potsdam - a city in the east Germany, located on the Havel. The capital and largest city of the federal state Brandenburg, which are part of the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan area.

Characteristic

The city is known mainly for its very valuable historic complexes, mainly from the Sanssouci park and palace complex, built in the 18th century by Frederick II the Great, which has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1990.

By plane

The proximity of Berlin provides a fairly good connection with the airports. The nearest airport is Berlin-Tegel, 25 km away, and Berlin-Schoenefeld airport, approximately 40 km.

By rail

Several railway lines run through the city in the directions of: Berlin, Berlin-Schönefeld airport, Jüterbogu, Dessau, Brandenburg an der Havel, Hennigsdorf and Senftenberg. The Berlin-Potsdam route was the first railway line in Prussia. In 1845 a railway line was opened on the section Berlin - Potsdam - Magdeburg. Potsdam does not have a separate railway junction, being part of the Berlin Outer Ring (Berliner Außenring). The most important railway stations are: Potsdam-Charlottenhof, Potsdam Griebnitzsee, Potsdam Medienstadt Babelsberg.

By car

Potsdam is connected to the motorway network. The city is surrounded on the west and south by the so-called Berliner Ring (Berlin's motorway ring road) - A10. The A115 motorway, known to Berlin as AVUS, runs across the eastern border of the city. Several important national roads run through the city: B1, B2 and B273. Potsdam lies on the German-Dutch holiday Oranier Route.

By bus

Communication

Potsdam has extensive public transport, which includes bus, tram and S-Bahn lines. The first two are managed by the municipal company Potsdam GmbH, which also operates 200 regional bus lines in Potsdam and Potsdam-Mittelmark and Havelland. There is a single freight rate for all means of transport established by the Berlin-Brandenburg Public Transport Authority (VBB).
