Port Louis is the capital of Mauritius.

Understand

While being a city that was for more than a century and a half administered by the British Empire, Port-Louis undeniably bears the imprint of France, to whom we owe many large-scale projects in the city. . Subsequently, the British appealed to the descendants of the French for local administration for 150 years, until independence. Indeed on their arrival, the English discovered a city so well maintained by the French that they did not consider it necessary to add much to it. To begin with, the pavements that adorn the sidewalks of the city are vestiges of the French reign, and are the pride of Mauritians who consider them an integral part of Port-Louis. The port and the Garden of the Company are also the fruit of the French contribution to the country. For a relatively small city, Port-Louis is full of other historic places. One of them, the Aapravasi Ghat, has even been part of the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2006. The particularity of this place is that it welcomed the first Indian immigrants to the country in the nineteenth century. . When we know that today more than 70% of Mauritians have Indian origins, we can easily imagine the symbolism of the Aapravasi Ghat for the country. The list of historic places in Port Louis does not stop there. In addition to the places mentioned above, we will note the Blue Penny Museum, the Place d'Armes, the Port-Louis Theater, and the Parliament.
