Port Louis is the capital of Mauritius.
To know
Port Louis has little tourist flow and those few who stay there are mostly businessmen. The mass of vacationers prefer, for obvious reasons, to relax on the beaches of Mauritius rather than strolling the streets of the capital. The trend is followed, in a certain sense by the inhabitants of Mauritius themselves who prefer to reside far from the center not in the seaside resorts but in the highland areas such as "Quatres Bornes" and Moka.
Yet Port Louis has something to offer. It presents, for example, the best shopping opportunities.
All in all it is also pleasant if only for its position and its size on a human scale. With about 200,000 inhabitants, life in Port Louis flows according to the rhythms of a provincial town even if there are problems related to traffic but only during rush hours. Once the working hours in the offices are over, the city streets are empty and often in the evening there is nothing to do but stay holed up in the hotel.

Port Louis: full screen map.Caudan Waterfront - The brand new harbor front can be considered the center of Port Louis or at least the place to go. Most hotels are located in the area including the luxurious Labourdonnais. There are also many western restaurants and shops. The name Caudan derives from an 18th century French colonist, a certain Jean Dominique Michel de Caudan who set up a salt extraction field where the "Robert Edward Hart" gardens are today.
The port area with its brand new buildings was rearranged at the end of the 20th century. Among the new buildings stands out the headquarters of the "Bank of Mauritius" built by the studio "Loebl Schlossman & Hackl" and inaugurated in 2006. It has 22 floors and is 98 m high.
Nothing or almost nothing remains of the time when Port Louis was a feverish port of the sugar trade brought by all means from the highland plantations.
Chinatown - The Chinese quarter extends on Royal Street, at the height of the square where the Jummah mosque is located. It is a picturesque neighborhood due to the numerous shops that overlook it.
