Porto Novo is the capital city Benin.
Introduce
Porto-Novo is a city in the south of Benin, the capital of this country, the capital of the Ouémé province, located on the Porto-Novo lagoon (a tributary of the Gulf of Guinea). It is one of the largest cities in the country. The city has a large seaport and is the commercial and administrative center of the surrounding agricultural area. This community was probably founded in the late 16th century as the capital of an African country. In the 17th century, the Portuguese built a commercial outpost here, which later became a center for returning African slaves sent to the Americas. At the end of the 19th century, the area came under French control and became the capital of French Dahomey in 1900. In 1960, when the country became independent, Porto-Novo became the capital of Benin.
