The small town Porvenir lies on the west coast of the Great Tierra del Fuego Island in the southern Chile, opposite the city Punta Arenas. It is the largest town on the Chilean part of the island, capital of the Provincia de Tierra del Fuego and gateway to the far more densely populated Argentine part.

background

Porvenir was founded in 1894 by Croatian and chilotic Gold prospectors founded. It is a smaller commercial center and supplies the surrounding estancias. Fishing is also important.

The city is often only perceived by travelers as a transit point, as it is in the shadow of Punta Arenas and Ushuaia stands. It is determined by traditional wooden architecture.

getting there

By plane

The small airport of Porvenir is served by Aerovías DAP Three times a day from Punta Arenas. This city is also the largest hub in the region.

In the street

Coming from the north (Argentina) the route is via the Primera Angostura (Crossing the Strait of Magellan by ferry, info at TABSA) and the small town Cerro Sombrero from cheapest.

The little frequented and somewhat bumpy gravel road Y-71 connects Porvenir to the east with the border crossing San Sebastian (Tierra del Fuego) in the center of the island. In good weather, the road running on the slope or directly on the coast of the Strait of Magellan offers a good view of the mountain ranges in the south of the Tierra del Fuego island on the other side of the Strait of Magellan.

By boat

Drive from Punta Arenas Car ferries from Tuesday to Sunday once a day to Porvenir. The ferry arrives in the morning and leaves at 2:00 p.m. The ferry terminal is 5km west of the city. The crossing takes 140 minutes, the tickets can also be bought with Argentine pesos at a poor exchange rate.

Practical advice

The only bank branch in town is the "Banco Estado" (Bernardo Phillipi, southwest of the central square). The machines there do not work with Visa cards (as of 12/15), but you can change money at the bank counter (ARS, USD, Euro).

The area code is 061.

trips

  • Cordón Baquedano. Low mountain range 20 km from Porvenir, with good vantage points on the Strait of Magellan.
  • Camerón and Lago Blanco. 265 km south of the lake landscape. The extremely remote village Camerón, 150 m south of Porvenir, lies on the Strait of Magellan and offers beautiful mountain landscapes. Hardly touched by tourism. The road continues about 100 km to Lago Blanco, where you can camp well.
