Tierra del Fuego - Feuerland

fire land (Spanish: Tierra del Fuego = "Land of Fire") is the southern tip of the South American continent and separated from it by the Strait of Magellan. The name goes back to the discoverer Magellan, who saw numerous fires on land and on the water here. These fires belonged to the indigenous people who have since been exterminated and always carried them with them in their boats. Tierra del Fuego politically belongs to the countries Chile and Argentina.

  • Ushuaia - on the south coast of Isla Grande, 60,000 inhabitants
  • Rio Grande, on the east coast of Isla Grande, 80,000 inhabitants
  • Tolhuin, in the central part of Isla Grande, 5,000 inhabitants

Chilean part

  • Porvenir - on the west coast of Isla Grande, 7,000 inhabitants
  • Cerro Sombrero, in the northwest of the Isla Grande, 1,000 inhabitants
  • Puerto Williams - on the north coast of Isla Navarino, 2,500 inhabitants
