History

The Starosty of Inowrocław was first established by Casimir the Great in the 14th century. In 1466, Inowrocław became the capital of the Inowrocław Province covering the north-western part of Kujawy. This state of affairs lasted until 1772, when the area was taken over by Prussia. Germanization intensified then and the settlement of Germans increased. In 1812 Napoleon Bonaparte marched through Inowrocław on his way to Moscow. In 1919, after over a hundred years of occupation, the area of Kujawy was incorporated into the Second Polish Republic. After the interwar period, World War II broke out. At the beginning of the war, the Germans carried out mass displacements of the Polish and Jewish people. Later, prisoners of war were brought to the region on their way to special camps, which were located, for example, in Mątwy. After the end of the war, patriotic activities, which were suppressed by the Soviet communists, intensified in the poviat. In the years 1950–1998, the region administratively belonged to the Bydgoszcz Province. The Inowrocław County was restored on January 1, 1999.
