Kruszwica (German: Kruschwitz) is a historic small town in Poland in the voivodeship Kuyavian Pomeranian. The place at the Networks, which flows through the Gopło Lake here, is known for its castle. The place is on the Romanesque Piast way.

background

The fortified mansion of the Goplanen tribe dates back to the 8th century. Subjugated by the Polans in the 9th century and merged with what was later to become Poland. The legend of Graf Popiel II., who is said to have lived at Kruszwica Castle, has been documented since 1115. In 1096 the place was destroyed in the battle of Władysław I, as the residents sided with his rebellious son Zbigniew I. In the 12th century, however, the place flourished again, as evidenced by numerous Romanesque church buildings. The castle was built around 1350 by Casimir III. the large one in the Gothic style. The town received city rights in 1422. Kruszwica was destroyed in 1657 by the Swedes. After that, the place lost its importance. After the First Partition of Poland in 1772, the place came successively to Prussia, in 1807 the Duchy of Warsaw, in 1815 again to Prussia and in 1871 to the German Empire. After the First World War he became Polish again.
