History

The present location of the poviat in the Pomeranian Voivodeship

In 1772, Kwidzyn was promoted from a provincial town to the seat of the regency. The Kwidzyn Region covered an area stretching from Wałcz in the west to Drush in the east, to Toruń in the south and Gdańsk in the north. The region was one of the richest in Prussian partition lands.

From the mid-nineteenth century, a slow economic recovery can be noticed, railroads and roads are being built. In 1883, the Malbork - Kwidzyn - Grudziądz railway line was launched, and in 1909 a railway bridge over the Vistula River near Grabów was built and a line to Smętowo was opened.

At the beginning of the 20th century, People's Banks were established in Tychnowy and Kwidzyn. On July 11, 1920, a plebiscite was held in Lower Powiśle to join the region to Poland. The results of the plebiscite were not successful for Poles living in the Kwidzyn regency. Only in the vicinity of Janów, Tychnów, Dubiel and Straszewo were the results favorable for Poland. By the decision of the Inter-Allied Commission, these towns were incorporated into Poland.

After World War II, the vicinity of Kwidzyn was separated and incorporated into the Suski poviat (in the Olsztyn voivodeship) and the Kwidzyn poviat (in the Gdańsk voivodeship). In 1952, the boundaries of poviats slightly changed, and since 1990 they have been functioning in the present form.
