Characteristic

History

The Pomeranian Voivodeship was created in 1999 from the voivodeships of the previous administrative division:

  • Gdańsk (Entire)
  • Słupsk (apart from the communes of Sławno poviat)
  • Elbląg (only the communes of the Nowy Dwór, Malbork, Kwidzyn and the present Sztum poviats)
  • Bydgoszcz (only 3 out of 4 communes of the Chojnice poviat)

As a result of the protests of Bydgoszcz, it was not possible to create a large Pomeranian region including Bydgoszcz, Toruń, Włocławek and Grudziądz (now part of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship).

According to data from 1 January 2014, the area of ​​the voivodship was 18,310.34 km².

According to data from December 31, 2012, in the province in the Pomeranian region, forests covered an area of ​​664.4 thous. ha, which constituted 36.3% of its area. 9.8k ha of forests were within the national parks.

Most of the voivodeship's area is located in Gdańsk Pomerania. Besides, its north-west part belongs to West Pomerania, while the eastern part belongs to Prussia.

Worth seeing

  • Gdansk - With Sopot, a famous resort and Gdynia - a port city established only in the 20th century. it is an urban organism known as the Tricity; for several centuries, Gdańsk was the richest and largest Polish city, it was here that Solidarity was founded, and a unique amount of historic architecture has been preserved in it;
  • Slowinski National Park - dunes breaking into the forest or, if you prefer, a desert between the sea and the land and a large lake;
  • Malbork - the capital of the former Teutonic State, the castle is a masterpiece of defensive Gothic architecture, the largest built of brick in the world;
  • Bory Tucholskie - a huge forest area is crossed by exceptionally clean and beautiful rivers - Wda and Brda, which can be classified as the most beautiful lowland canoeing routes;
  • I will - a place by the Baltic Sea, where it is worth sunbathing on the beach and swimming in the Baltic Sea;
  • Bychowo - a Kashubian village, whose attraction is a manor house (originally from the 19th century) rebuilt almost from scratch and a manor park with interesting trees. A mini zoo is an attraction for children. A few kilometers to the east there is Lake Żarnowieckie, to the west - Lake Choczewskie. Right next to it Gniewinowhich became famous on the occasion of Euro 2012 and hosting the Spanish national football team. Right behind the village there is an observation tower "Kaszubskie Oko";
  • In the Kashubian countryside Bottom the only boat pilgrimage in Poland takes place across the lake - Żarnowieckie Lake. There is also (on the main road that runs through the village) a small but charming open-air museum. On the occasion of the fair, attractions are organized, such as baking bread in a 100-year-old oven. You can visit Zagroda Gburska and Rybacka;
  • Starogard Gdański and Owidz - the capital of Kociewie with a stronghold. Starogard Gdański has 48,000 inhabitants, but it is worth seeing the Gothic parish church, the neo-Renaissance town hall and the Museum of the Kociewie Land. In Owidz - a village next to Starogard, there is a settlement and the Museum of Slavic Mythology, where you can visit them in 3D glasses;
  • Stegna - one of the seaside towns. It is visited by many tourists;
  • Swołowo - one of the historically most interesting villages in On the sea, recognized as the European Village of Cultural Heritage and the capital of "Checkered lands". There are preserved objects here frame construction (half-timbered) from the beginning of the 19th century, typical of wealthy Pomeranian peasant farms, often standing behind the courtyard. Most of the houses, but also stables, cowsheds and barns are built using the half-timbered method;
  • Bytów - a town in the Bytów poviat with 17,000 inhabitants. It is worth seeing the church of St. Catherine and John the Baptist and the Teutonic castle.
