History

The localities in the area have been inhabited since the Bronze Age, an example of which is the settlement on Lake Mieleńskie. The first settlement of Polans was Mogilno, where a stronghold, significant for this region, was built. It developed slowly, until the 11th century, when the Benedictines came here, brought by Bolesław the Szczodry. In 1231, the high position of Mogilno was covered by Strzelno, which received city rights. Mogilno was granted the same privilege only 197 years later.

In 1772 these areas were incorporated into the Prussian partition, and in the years 1807–1815 to the Duchy of Warsaw. After the fall of the Duchy of Warsaw, the region was reattached to Prussia, initially as part of the Duchy of Poznań (until 1848), then as part of the Poznań Province until the beginning of 1919. After the establishment of independent Poland, the Mogilno land experienced a period of economic and demographic revival. At that time, trade, small services and small industry developed here, but still agriculture was the main element of the economy.

In 1939, the German invasion took place, and at the beginning of 1945, the Soviet army passed through Mogilno. After the war, these areas were administratively part of the Bydgoszcz Province.

Tourist routes

Saint Adalbert's Cultural Heritage Trail is one of the main tourist routes of the Gniezno Lake District. It is one of the most attractive and rich, due to the sites or unique natural sites next to which it has been established. The starting point is Mogilno, where the monastery is the most important point on the trail. The route continues through Kwieciszewo, where it is worth seeing a church from the 16th century. Then you get to Kruszwica.

The Piast Trail it is probably the most famous trail in this part of Poland. Its section, where Mogilno is located, is primarily related to the no longer existing medieval stronghold, near which a monastery was erected around 1050. It is worth noting that despite many renovations and changes that took place in the appearance of the building, its cellars and some elements still remind us of the Piast past of the temple.
