History
Historically, Toyama Prefecture formed the Etchū province. With the abolition of the Han system in 1871, the province was renamed Niikawa Prefecture. In 1876, Niikawa Prefecture was merged with Ishikawa Prefecture. But this merger lasted until 1881, the year in which the entire territory was renamed Toyama Prefecture.
