Pregny-Chambésy is a municipality of canton of Geneva, in Swiss. It is located on the right bank of the Leman.

Understand

The commune of Pregny-Chambésy is known for its large estates, its castles and its mansions ...

Story

The origin of Pregny, certainly occupied by the Romans and then by the Burgundians, is only attested since the XIIe century. However, the Middle Ages left no trace there, except for the so-called historic roads, the moats of Calvin Island and the foundations of the castles of Tournay and Penthes. The name of Pregny (fundus priniacus) and de Chambésy (Sambesie) date back to this period. Dependent on the seigneury of Gex, Pregny suffered from the same upheavals as the rest of the Pays de Gex during the Renaissance: Savoyard sovereignty (1353-1536), the Bernese conquest and the introduction of the Reformation ( 1536-1567), Savoyard restitution (1567-1590), brief conquest by Geneva (1590-1601), attachment to France and return to Catholicism (1601-1814), occupation by the Austrians (1814-1815), Counter-Reformation to XVIIe century, tumults of the Revolution, attachment to Switzerland (1815), then attachment to the canton of Geneva (1816).

Pregny-Chambésy, the smallest of the six communes of the Pays de Gex ceded by France to Switzerland, presented a double interest for the Genevans: the continuity of the access to the Swiss territory and the residential paradise of the patrician families. In less than a century, they literally took possession of the Pregny landscape, which offered a unique view of the lake, Mont-Blanc and the city of Geneva. Thus, three quarters of the official history of the town is devoted to that of the great families who inhabited it.

The small peasants of the commune, practicing for the most part a subsistence agriculture and a little viticulture, were numerous to serve the patrician families for the development and the maintenance of the fields. Thus, one does not find large farms, as in other communes of the Geneva countryside. On the other hand, the large estates were equipped for the most part with buildings for agricultural use, the architecture of which is often as remarkable as that of the residences.
