Location of the province of Almería in Spain.

Almeria is the easternmost province of Andalusia, Spain.

Regions

The main regions of the province of Almería are:

  • Almería (capital): it is the capital of the province and the city with the largest population in it (185,309 according to INE 2006). Culturally, it is famous for Alcazaba, national monument, the mineral loading bay (also known as Cable Inglés), the Cathedral of Santa Máría de la Encarnación, the Archaeological Museum (where you can learn about the cultures of Los Millares and El Argar), the refuges of the Spanish civil war (4.5 km of underground galleries with 67 entrances, with a capacity to house 41,000 people). In 2005 it hosted the Mediterranean Games. It has a university and an international airport located in the El Alquián neighborhood.
  • West: where populations such as Roquetas de Mar, for its tourist infrastructures, or The ejido, known for its agriculture under plastic.
  • Cabo de Gata: within the region we indicate Nijar, famous for its traditional crafts (based on ceramics and jarapas).
  • Alpujarra - Río Nacimiento: region divided between Granada and Almería. We can highlight white peoples and of Muslim origin such as Laujar de Andarax or Ohanes, a town famous in the last century for its table grapes.
  • Los Filabres: region of the interior of the province where we find spaces as disparate as the desert of Taverns, the gypsum karsts of Sorbas or the snow in winter in Sierra Alhamilla (a point famously known for being a stage in La Vuelta Ciclista España and for having a very prestigious Spa).
  • I raised: region bordering Murcia, known for its fantastic and isolated beaches. We find traditional villages but well adapted for tourism (not massive) such as Vera, Carboneras or Mojacar. You can still locate lost districts among very inaccessible coves such as Aquamargue, Saint Joseph, The Isleta del Moro, Rodalquilar or Black ones.
  • Almanzora Valley: Central region of the province whose capital is Almanzora Caves.
  • The Velez: originally, belonging to the Marquesado de Los Vélez, the towns of Velez Blanco, with its imposing Renaissance castle as dominator, and Velez Rubio, authentic artistic gem.
