Leon province - Provincia de León

Lion (Llión, in Leon; León in Galician) is a Spanish province located in the northwest of the autonomous community of Castile and Leon, having as capital the city of Lion.

It is characterized by its great variety of landscapes, from the Picos de Europa and Montes de León to the plateau lands, as well as by its population, folkloric, folkloric and gastronomic diversity.

Conform, together with the provinces of Zamora Y Salamanca, the Region of León, León region or kingdom of León, a Spanish historical region, defined as such in the territorial division of Spain in 1833.

Location

It limits the north with the Principality of Asturias Y Cantabria, where the Cantabrian mountain range plays the role of natural border between the North plateau and the Cantabrian coast. To the west, there are different units of the Galaico-Leonés massif that act as a border with Galicia, specifically with the provinces of Pray Y Lugo, limiting to the east with the Province of Palencia and to the south with the provinces of Zamora Y Valladolid.

Territorial organization

The Province of León is structured and divided into 211 municipalities, of which 38 are located in El Bierzo, the only officially existing region, according to the law promulgated in 1991. However, there are a whole series of regions or territorial divisions, both historical and agrarian or functional, most of them related to the orography and the territory, according to valleys in the mountains or river limits in the plains.
