Katanga province is a southeastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo bordering on the Zambia.
To know
It consists mostly of fertile plateaus used for agriculture and livestock breeding. It is one of the most prosperous regions, rich in mineral deposits.
Background
De facto independent from 1960-1966 during the "Congo crisis".
Territories and tourist destinations
Urban centers
- Lubumbashi - Capital of the province and second city of the country. It is an important mining town located 1000 meters high near the border with Zambia.
- Kabalo - On the banks of the Luvua River and located in the railway section leading to Lake Tanganyika.
- Kamina - Located at over 2,000 m, it is home to an important railway hub and also has a civil airport.
Other destinations
- Upemba Lake - Large partially marshy lake, formed by one of the branches of the Congo River, the Lualaba.
- Kundelungu National Park - The park has a series of plateaus and hills between 1,200 and 1,700 m. It owes its fame to the Lofoi waterfalls, formed by a tributary of the Lufira. These are the highest waterfalls in Africa and in fact the second in the world, at 384m high.
- Upemba National Park - Park rich in savannas and fauna that extends on the eastern shores of Lake Upemba.
