Province of Limón is a region of the Costa Rica corresponds to the coast of the sea Caribbean.

To know

The administrative province of Limón corresponds to the Caribbean region of Costa Rica which runs from the border with the Nicaragua north to the one with Panama South.

The region remained isolated from the rest of the country until 1890, the year in which Puerto Limón it was reached by a railway. Still the region has a different aspect influenced by the Caribbean culture.

Distinguished from the rest of the country for its landscape, climate and ethnographic character, the coast on the Caribbean Sea does not yet have significant tourist infrastructures but it is a "little paradise" for those who love relaxed atmospheres and are not afraid of frequent showers and mosquito bites. Puerto Limón it is the regional capital. Further north, a few kilometers from the Nicaraguan border, we find Tortuguero, a typically Caribbean-looking village and a popular destination for those who love the sea and nature, but difficult to reach individually due to the lack of land connections. Tortuguero is also one of the largest national parks in the country, considered a sanctuary for sea turtles, which come to its beaches to lay their eggs throughout the year, and in particular from April to July, when it is possible to observe the giant leatherback turtles. and from July to October, when the green turtle lays its eggs. South of Puerto Limón meet Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, a renowned seaside resort that offers easy access to the beaches, being a few kilometers from the junction with the road that leads to the nearby border crossing with Panama. Another place where you can make a stop in this stretch of coast is Cahuita, one of the access points to the homonymous national park, which also includes a marine reserve, which contains wonderful postcard beaches, complete with coconut palms and surrounded by small coral reefs, a prelude to the most consistent ones of the archipelago PanamanianBocas del Toro, about thirty kilometers just across the border.

When to go

The Caribbean side of Costa Rica receives copious rains. September, October are the months that guarantee a greater number of sunny days although they are not completely free from downpours.
