In 1502, Christopher Columbus landed on the small island Uvita, which is located just off the Caribbean coast of the city of Puerto Limón. However, the city itself wasn't founded until the 19th century. Allegedly she got the name Puerto Limónbecause there was a lemon tree in front of the governor's house. Due to the export of bananas, Puerto Limón became the main port of the country.
