Puttalam is a city in the Northwest Province of Sri Lanka and capital of the Puttalam district.

The city of Puttalam is located in a large lagoon. This ends here Dutch Canalwhich was laid out by the Dutch, they used it to transport spices. Fishing, shrimp and pearl farming as well as salt production are important industries. Coconut plantations also play an important role. There is also a large cement plant near the town. A 1 Coal power plant and 2 Wind power plants do not necessarily add to the attractiveness either. In contrast, the northern end of the lagoon is near the village Kalpitiya an attractive tourist region.

During the civil war, numerous Muslims fled the north of the country and settled here. Puttalam is therefore one of the few cities in the country where there are more Muslims than Buddhists.
