Pyrenees-Orientales is a department in the French region Languedoc-Roussillon. The department with the serial number 66 has a coastline on the Mediterranean Sea in the east. In the south, across the main ridge of the Pyrenees, Spain and in the west Andorra. In France, the departments border Ariège in the west and Aude in the North.

The department historically belonged to Catalonia and is still today La Catalogne française called. Although the Catalan language seems almost extinct, there are many efforts to keep it alive. For several years now, much of the official signage has been bilingual.
