The one in the Dordogne lying city Périgueux, which was called Vesunna by the Celts (an old tower is still called Vesone), by the Romans Civitas Petrocoriorum, actually consists of two united cities: Cité and Puy-St.-Front, which, regardless of their close proximity, were in continuous feud with each other until 1240 lived It was not until the common resistance against the Counts of Périgord that their inhabitants united to form a free bourgeoisie, which gave its own authority, only depended on the king and had the right to mint.

Floor plan of the St. Front Cathedral

The old capital of Périgord has significant Roman and medieval remains. In 1857 and 1858, remarkable remains of Roman buildings were discovered, e.g. thermal baths, an amphitheater, etc. Remains of the fortification walls from the 5th century have also been preserved. The strangest building in the city is the St. Front Cathedral from the end of the 11th century, which was built in the Byzantine style based on the model of St. Mark's Church in Venice and has been restored since 1865, as well as the Church of St. Etienne from the 11th century and 17th century. Among the squares and streets are the Place Bugeaud (with the statue of Marshal Bugeaud), the Cours Michel-Montaigne (with the statues of the moralist Montaigne and General Daumesnil) and the Cours Tourny (with the monument to Fénelons ) to be highlighted.
