Qaanaaq is a city of Greenland.

To know

Geographical notes

The city is one of the northernmost population centers in the world. It is located, in fact, very north of the Arctic Circle, in the Inglefield fjord, and is just 1300 km from the North Pole.

When to go

The town has a polar climate, with average daily temperatures that only slightly exceed 0 ° C in the three summer months, although occasionally, in June or July, it can reach 15 ° C. Minimum temperatures, on average around -28 ° C in January and February, can sometimes drop to -40 ° C. In this area the phenomenon of the midnight sun is particularly pronounced and lasts from mid-April to the end of August, so if you are not fond of perennial darkness during the winter, it is advisable to go here during this time.

Background

Qaanaaq did not originate as a Greenlandic settlement. Its foundation was forced in 1953 by the US military who, decided to build the Thule Air Base in the village of Pituffik, forced the population of the village to move. The locals then moved from their home village, founding the city of Qaanaaq a little further on. The airbase is still active and pays a $ 300 million rent for the granting of sovereignty to the Greenlandic government. For military reasons, access to the base must be requested from the competent authorities.
