the Marais-Jacqmain district is a district of Pentagon which, itself, is the central district of city of brussels.

Understand

Unfortunately, in this district and apart from the periphery of the Martyrs Square, many buildings were victims of the haussmannization from the end of the XIXe century and Brusselsization from the 1960s and 1970s.

If the eastern part ("the Marshes") is more devoted to administrations, ministries and bank headquarters, the western part ("Jacqmain-Adolphe Max") is totally devoted to retail. This is where we find the new road who, along his 590 meters all in a straight line, is the busiest shopping street in Belgium with more than 52,000 visitors daily but also the most expensive with rents, in 2010, of 1 680  at M2 and which has the second largest shopping center in the country, namely City 2 with an area of 51 000 m2. It is in this rue Neuve that Belgium experienced its greatest disaster, since its independence, on May 22, 1967 with the fire of the department store To Innovation (today Galeria Inno) which left 323 dead and 150 injured.

To see

Place De Brouckère after the pedestrianization with, opposite, the old hotel Continental.
  • 1 Place de Brouckère Logo indicating a wikipedia link (subways 15, station "De Brouckère » - 343132, "De Brouckère" station - bus 293846476366718688, “De Brouckère” stop) – Made famous by the song Brussels by Jacques Brel, this square was not inaugurated until 1897, nearly twenty years after the construction of the boulevards in the center of which it is itself the center. Until the beginning of the XXe century, it was the most prestigious square in Brussels and thanks to the many illuminated advertising signs, it was compared to a "mini Broadway". From this time, there remains the presence of two prestigious palaces: theMetropolis hotel and the Atlanta hotel. Since 2015, it is from here that the fireworks of the new year are fired and that, as in Times Square, takes place the final luminous count.
The Northern Passage.

It connects the new road to Boulevard Adolphe Max and its name derives from the fact that the latter, when the gallery was built, was called Boulevard du Nord. If, at the beginning, it contained thirty-two stores, today and by the expansion of certain businesses which regrouped several surfaces, it lists only twenty. Among these the King's cutlery founded in 1750 and one of the two brands of Davidoff in the "Pentagon".

It is in a classic Renaissance style with an influence of the Brabant baroque through its softened straight lines. The statue of the virgin Mary surrounded by the twelve stars of the Apocalypse which surmounts the portal was fixed there in 1857. Inside, the four paintings of brotherhood, on oak wood, dating from 1723, are the oldest works. . The pulpit of truth, dating from 1758, in carved oak and of fantastic architecture represents the fall of humanity between the tree of life and that of death. In a side chapel, built in 1854, there is a statue of Our Lady of Good Success of the XVIIe century and from the old Augustinian church.
  • 4 Martyrs Square Logo indicating a wikipedia link (train, station "Brussels-Congress "- subways 15, station "De Brouckère ») – Built in 1775, under the odonym of Place Saint-Michel, by the architect louvanist Claude Fisco, it is the first example of neoclassical architecture in the capital. The layout of the facades is also uniform: the ground floor has split, whose depth is equal to half that of the incisions, which emphasize the horizontality of the whole; the windows have arched windows: between the ground floor and the first floor runs a stylobate ; the ground floor supports pilasters over a storey and a half; the whole is surmounted by a frieze with triglyphs and metopes and crowned with an attic; the facades have a continuous saddleback roof. In 1830, the first victims of revolutionary battles were buried there. For a long time, it was a popular place to live, sheltered from the bustle of the new road neighbor, but, after a long disaffection, the buildings with a dignified and homogeneous character made it the ideal place of investment for prestigious companies, public and private. Currently, it hosts ministerial cabinets of the Flemish community, architectural offices and a performance hall: the Place des Martyrs theater. In its center, the monument and the crypt to the martyrs of the revolution of 1830, which makes it the most sacred land in the country. To the right of this monument, coming from rue Saint-Michel, the bronze and blue stone monument to Count Frédéric de Merode, hero of the Belgian Revolution and the first member of the Belgian high nobility to be victim of the fighting. On the left, the monument to Jenneval, lyricist of the Belgian national anthem The Brabançonne and whose body rests in the central crypt.
