the European quarter is a district of Brussels.

Understand

Rue de la Loi, an emblematic name, is the artery where the main European institutions are located, alongside the most important Belgian ministries, as well as the Belgian Parliament, which occupies the oldest part of the site which dates back to the 18th century. In Brussels, when we say rue de la Loi we mean the area forming a triangle between the centuries-old Brussels park, the Cinquantenaire park and the Leopold park, both from the 19th century. The European institutions of the Commission and the Council of Ministers are located in the modern part of rue de la Loi, near the underground stations of the Schuman metro station and the railway, at the Schuman roundabout. The European Parliament is located not far away, on the edge of Leopold Park, near the Bruxelles-Luxembourg train station and the Place du Luxembourg.

This area is historically residential, but it lost this function as institutions settled there. Historic and residential buildings have been replaced by modern offices, with a few exceptions. These buildings were built, at the beginning, without a large overall plan and without government control, but by speculation from the private sector investing in spaces that would never have been possible without it. What, moreover, proved useful to fill the time between the beginnings of Europe in Brussels and the official takeover by Belgium of the process of their installation. After the considerable investment of Berlaymont and its transformation, the Belgian government began to invest in the infrastructure of the district, stressing that the uncertain development of the beginnings was over. Since the end of the 20th century, architectural competitions have been organized with a view to homogenizing the rue de la Loi district and its monumental development planned according to the plan of the architect Christian de Portzamparc born from the suites of the location of the Just Lipse Council building opposite the Berlaymont, seat of the commission, as well as a master plan.
