History

The Micronesians were the first inhabitants of the archipelago. In 1526, Alvaro de Saavedra, the Spanish explorer set foot here. Perhaps the islands are named after British captain John Marshall, who began his exploration of the islands in 1788.

The Marshalls were under German control from 1885-1914, and then became a protectorate of Japan in 1920-1944. The United States represented the United Nations as an administrative guardian from 1947. From 1946 to 1956, the United States conducted nuclear bomb tests on the islands of Bikini and Eniwetok. The inhabitants of Bikini Island had to move to another island and a total of 33 atomic and H-bomb tests took place here. These islands are still uninhabited due to pollution by nuclear weapons. In 1983, the U.S. government paid $183.7 million in damages. In 1999, the United States agreed to pay $3.8 million to bring people back to Bikini Island.

In 1986, the United States and the Marshalls signed an Agreement of Free Association, under which the archipelago established an autonomous government but received economic and military assistance from the United States, about $65 million per year. The Marshalls joined the United Nations in 1991.
