The Louis-Babel ecological reserve is by far the largest ecological reserve in Quebec to Canada. It includes the northern part of theRené-Levasseur Island to Manicouagan.
Understand
The Louis-Babel ecological reserve protects boreal, mountain and alpine ecosystems in the middle north of Quebec. It also protects, in part, one of the five meteorite impact crater sites in Quebec. Its territory includes in particular Mount Babel with a height of 952 m which is the result of the impact of the meteorite that occurred 210 million years. The site is a place of research for geologists and biologists.
The reserve owes its name to Louis Babel, an Oblate missionary sent to evangelize the Innu and Naskapi. He is considered to be the first scientific explorer of northeastern Quebec.
