Røst it is the southernmost island of the archipelago Lofoten, in Norway.
To know
How Værøy, Røst is known for its puffin colonies. Unlike Værøy with its mountains, Røst is very flat, with the highest point only 12 meters above sea level. The economic activity of the island is linked to fishing, especially cod, and to the production of stockfish.
Geographical notes
The territory boasts one of the most important seabird settlements in the North Atlantic, with colonies of puffins, three-toed gulls and cormorants, and as such is an important naturalistic tourism destination in the Lofoten Islands.
When to go
The hot one Gulf Stream flowing around the islands determines the climate. This leads to exceptionally mild winters. Despite its location in the far north of the Arctic Circle the average temperature is above freezing in all months. Summers are cool and a constant wind blows.
Background
The Venetian nobleman Pietro Querini found refuge in Røst in 1432, following a shipwreck. In 1932, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the event, the inhabitants of Røst erected a monument in memory of Pietro Querini and his men on the island of Sandøy. Based on the story of Querini's journey, the Opera "Querini" was performed in Røst for the first time in 2012 with the participation of accredited singers in Norway accompanied by the locals. The performance was very popular nationally and internationally.
