Rats is a place in Austria.

background

Ratten lies in the northeast of the Austrian state Styria in the district Wheat. The community is divided into two parts, the church district and the pit farmer.

The place name is derived from Middle High German redden (clear, make arable).

The area around rats was settled around the year 1200. The residents were mostly farmers. The place was first mentioned in a document in 1340. Ratten remained a small village for centuries until a lignite mine was opened in 1922. As a result, the population rose sharply. With the end of mining in 1960, there was massive emigration. In the last two decades the population has stabilized again and is now almost 1200. Due to increased investments in the tourist sector over the past few years, rats are now an insider tip among nature lovers.
