Red Bank is a village in Stann Creek District in Belize.
background
This small village on the edge of the Southern Highway right on the border of the Toledo District is mainly inhabited by Mayans. The village is rather unspectacular if it weren't for the highest concentration of scarlet macaws (Ara macao) in a nearby valley in the dry season. They come here once a year to eat the ripe fruits of the Annato shrub.
The village was founded less than 30 years ago, and the first settlers had no idea of this natural sensation. Instead, the macaw was first hunted to eat it. Only the Belize Audubon Society enlightened the residents and called the "Scarlet Macaw Group" into being. The villagers were trained in ecotourism and a small infrastructure was created for it.
getting there
By plane
In the street
If you follow the Southern Highway to the south, a sign 32 miles south of the intersection with the Hummingbird Highway points to Red Bank to the west. If you follow this path you will reach the village of Red Bank after approx. 6 km.
mobility
You can quickly find your way around the clear village. Here one should ask for Mr. Geronimo Sho (501-6-22233). This organizes a local guide who accompanies you to the nearby valley.
Tourist Attractions
- Hummingbird Place. There is a small picnic area at the foot of a hill. A crystal clear stream with white sand and beautiful rocks meanders along its edge. This place invites you to relax and swim. In addition to the hummingbird, it is not uncommon to see a kingfisher fishing here.
- Lookout point. If you accept a short, strenuous ascent from Hummingbird Place, you will reach the viewpoint over a secluded valley. A tree trunk serves as a bench and in a small plastic box you will find a book to write down the birds that have been sighted. The vantage point gives a view of the most green valley in which the Annato shrub can be found. If the fruits in the valley are just ripe, you don't have to wait long for the first macaws.
