Reno is a city of United States of America, the county seat of Washoe County, in the State of Nevada.

To know

Reno is steeped in rich, diverse and harsh history. This is where the historic Johnson-Jeffries fight took place and this is where Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable shot The Misfits in 1961, the last film completed for both of them (Gable died in 1960, after filming had finished but before release; Monroe died in 1962). This is where the railroad descends from the mountains from California to cross the Truckee River and begin the long journey east. It's hard to walk the streets of Reno without seeing the history of this dynamic city.

Most Renoites consider it all to start in 1859, when Charles Fuller built a log bridge over the Truckee River and began loading to cross it on the way to the California Gold Rush or return to Nevada for the "Washoe Rush. "in Virginia City. Fuller created a refuge for tired travelers to rest. It served meals at a price and created an opportunity for seekers to exchange stories and information.

The site of the city of Reno, named after the civil war general Jesse Reno, was established on May 13, 1868.

Since its inception, Reno has spread across much of the Truckee Meadows. Reno and Sparks (the latter a smaller adjacent town) now extend through this small valley that separates the mountains from the Sierra Nevada to the west and the vast desert areas of Nevada to the east.

The founders' profit characteristic may have occasionally plagued the course of subsequent Reno generations. Some Renoites claim that the Nevadians are simply freer in nature. Others think the city has repeated in the footsteps of the founders of the gold rush era. Certainly, the choices made today are what will determine the true nature of the community. Regardless, Reno enjoys a fairly decent quality of life with four seasons, winter and summer fun, a great university, and plenty of other entertainment.

Reno is located in northwestern Nevada, at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and serves as the urban center for a region that includes neighboring Carson City and the Carson Valley, the Lake Tahoe, the Pyramid Lake and the historic mining town Virginia City, home of Comstock Lode. Together with the city of Sparks, Reno is located in the Truckee Meadows and together they form the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area.

Competition in the last few years of the 20th century slowed down the gambling business in Reno considerably. As its center has been centered on gambling for 50 years, the center itself has suffered. The downtown has weathered the storm today and is getting better with projects like a baseball and entertainment district and several condo projects that have been completed despite the economic slowdown. Growth in the area continued thanks to its livability. Reno is working hard to build a different type of city for a greater variety of tastes, and keeping this in mind will help the visitor see the city with the right kind of eyes.

When to go

Reno is located on the western end of the Great Basin, an area that extends up to Salt Lake City that does not pour into the sea: the water is carried away only by evaporation. Average precipitation is around 180mm per year, with much of that occurring in winter in the form of snow. July is the hottest month, with an average high of 33 ° C, and January is the coldest month, with an average low of -7 ° C.

By car

From California northern

Since Reno and the Sierra Nevada are popular weekend destinations for Northern Californians, traffic can be bad when arriving in Reno on a Friday night or leaving it on Sunday evening, especially in the ski season.

The direct path from Sacrament to Reno is the one via Interstate 80 on Donner Summit (2206m). This route sees a large amount of snowfall during the winter and in the winter it will be closed several times even for one day. Northern California residents also use the U.S. 395 from Susanville County, this highway is located at a lower altitude, has less traffic and is passable without any problems. Residents living in the Redding and Chico areas of California find this route safer and faster. If you plan to cross this or any other Sierra Nevada pass in winter, keep an eye on the weather forecast and always bring snow chains if you don't have all-wheel drive.

An alternative route is US 50 along Echo Summit (2,234m). This route follows the river from the Sacramento Valley and then descends into the Lake Tahoe basin. From there you can continue on US 50 to Carson City, and from there head north to Reno on US 395, or continue around the lake to Incline Village and alight at Reno on the Mount Rose Highway. This route is two-lane for only much of the route, and traffic can be heavy in both winter and summer, and winter maintenance isn't as good as on Interstate 80.

Passes through the Sierra Nevada south of the U.S. 50 are poorly maintained in winter (approximately November to May). And when they are open they are out of the way and potentially dangerous.

From Southern California

The route to Reno is via US 395. This route will take you along the Owens Valley to Bishop, past Mammoth Lakes, to Carson City and from there to Reno. The section between Bishop and Carson City crosses three passes up to 2,482 high. m where there can be moderately heavy snowfall during winter storms. In that case it would be best to take US 6 from Bishop on Montgomery Pass to US 95 which stays in much lower valleys with less snow. In Schurz, past Lake Walker, take the U.S. 95 north to Fernley, then I-80 west to Reno.

From Las Vegas

Don't be fooled by the fact that Las Vegas and Reno are in the same state - it takes about 8 hours of driving between the two cities. Take US 95 north to Fallon, then US 50 west to Fernley and Interstate 80 west to Reno. If you're not a fan of desert landscapes, boredom is a serious risk on this trip. Winter weather generally won't be a big deal on this trip, but don't count on finding food or fuel outside the major cities (Beatty, Tonopah, Hawthorne, Fallon and Fernley)

During the summer, the heat along US 95 can be tough on you and your vehicle. A much more convenient alternative to cooking in the car is driving at night. Numerous shooting stars and other astral phenomena can be seen in many of the dark stretches between the small towns along US 95 that you may miss in the scorching sun. Keep in mind that driving at night can be dangerous due to limited visibility from hills and mountains. Be sure to rest well before embarking on this journey.

From the East

The busiest route to Reno from the east is Interstate 80, which follows the old emigrant trail along the Humboldt River most of the way through Nevada, and so grades are generally easy. However, it does so at the expense of swinging well north of the Reno direct route. The US 50 is more direct, but traverses several large mountain ranges and therefore features some tight turns, steep slopes, and a few hairpin bends. Don't count on searching for food or fuel along US 50 outside major cities (Ely, Eureka, Austin, Fallon and Fernley).

On the train

  • 2 Reno station (In the city center on 280 N Center St and within walking distance of all downtown casinos). The station is full-service, including an internal waiting room and a registered baggage service. Amtrak California also operates shuttle buses between Reno and Sacramento and connects to the Capitol Corridor, serving Northern California, e San Joaquins, which serves the Central Valley and several locations to the south.

By bus

Intercity buses stop at3 RTC Centennial Plaza Transit Center located at 1421 Victorian Ave in Sparks, the airport, downtown Amtrak station located at 280 N Center St or other locations. See the lists below to find out where they are:

How to get around

By public transport

Reno's public transport system, called RTC RIDE, is operated by Washoe County Regional Transportation Commission. The busiest route, bus no. 1, has been replaced with two services, RTC RAPID, a priority express bus with limited stops, and RTC CONNECT, the venue. RAPID travels 15 minutes or more forward most of the day through downtown Reno (a good starting point is the 4th Street RTC station at 4th and Lake) and along South Virginia Street (the main north-south route) to at Meadowood Mall. RTC RAPID should serve any tourist well for most shopping, dining and gambling needs.

Other must-know routes are # 11, which travels between downtown Reno and downtown Sparks, and the Sierra Spirit circulatory bus (7:00 - 19:00), which connects various downtown destinations along the Virginia corridor. Street to the Truckee River to the south and the University of Nevada, Reno to the north. In downtown Reno, all buses stop at or near the 4th Street RTC station at 4th and Lake St, where The Bus Book can also be found.

Fares can be paid on the bus in cash (exact change) or with a pass. All RTC RIDE passes are available at pass vending machines (as of March 28, 2011 day passes cost $ 4 at the station, if you buy them on the bus they cost $ 5. A travel fare costs $ 2, but asking for a transfer allows to travel on any bus in any direction for 1.5 hours from the time of purchase. All major casinos have a bus stop for easy access), available at RTC 4th Street Station and Meadowood Mall, and the ticket it can be purchased with cash, currency, debit or credit card (cash only if purchased on the bus).

By taxi

Taxis in Reno are numerous, efficient and comfortable. At the airport, downtown or near major casinos they should be very easy to find, in other places you should expect to call to arrange pickup.

By car

Reno is served by two highways: I-80 which runs east to west and US 580 (formerly 395) which runs north to south. Surrounding the Truckee Meadows Valley is the McCarran Blvd bypass. The main commercial thoroughfare is Virginia Street, which runs north to south through downtown Reno. Major east-west routes include Moana Lane, Plumb Lane, Mill Street, Second Street, Fourth Street and Sixth Street. Major routes running north to south in Reno include Keystone Avenue, Lakeside Drive, Wells Avenue, and Kietzke Lane.

Car rentals

Nearly all national car rental agencies serve Reno-Tahoe International Airport. Note that several agencies do not have fleets on the airport property. In particular, the Enterprise fleet is 1.6 km away from the terminal. However, the terminal includes an Enterprise service counter offering free shuttle service during business hours, taxi vouchers, and a pickup hotline for after hours drop-offs.

What see

Reno is an interesting city, with many things to do and see day and night; many attractions that should be considered "not to be missed" are within a 30-60 minute drive from the city. Therefore, renting a car is a good idea when visiting Reno.

Kayak

In Reno, kayaking can be practiced at Wingfield Park. Nearby you can book equipment rental and outdoor adventures.

Mountain Bike

The open desert terrain that surrounds much of the city of Reno, especially to the northwest, offers great mountain biking. Mount Peavine has many trail networks that are a biker's paradise, most single-track and most technical. Many cyclists set out near Rancho San Rafael Park to access the Peavine trails. Beware, however, as there are often gun-happy residents firing away, not always sober, farther into government lands; also make sure you bring plenty of water, as the desert heat can be quite oppressive. Find more information in books like Mountain Biking Reno & Carson City: Best Trails by R.W. Miskimins. Nearby areas, such as the Lake Tahoe, offer even more for mountain bikers, such as Tahoe's famous Flume Trail.

Road cycling

There is a pretty good bike path along the Truckee River that stretches from the eastern edges of Sparks to the western limits of Reno and beyond. The section within the city limits is fun and easy for riders of any level, but it's really just a section of the Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway which, once completed, will start from Lake Tahoe until you get to Pyramid Lake: 186.68 km in total.

Excursions

Reno and the surrounding areas have thousands of miles of hiking trails, ranging from park walks to wild mountain hikes. Washoe County maintains a guide called Truckee Meadows Trails, although this is not complete for all trails in the region.

  • Rancho San Rafael Regional Park, just north of the University of Nevada campus, contains a variety of trails for different skill levels. The paths of the arboretum are easily passable. For a moderate hike, the Evans Creek Trail runs in a loop on either side of the eponymous creek canyon. There is also "the N", a huge whitewashed landmark located on the side of a hill at the north end of the park. Two paths lead to the N: a longer but easier path from the side, or a harder straight from the base of the hill.

"Burning Man" Festival

Reno is the closest major city to Black Rock City, where the "Burning Man" festival takes place. Many burners pass through Reno on the way to Black Rock City, and many Reno businesses stock up on stoves, extra water, and camping supplies during Burning Man week. Some hotels offer festival discounts reserved for travelers staying overnight in Reno. .

Around
