Rhenish open-air museum - Rheinisches Freilichtmuseum

The Rhenish open-air museum (official title "LVR-Freilichtmuseum Kommern"), is an 80 hectare open-air museum at Mechernich. 65 historical houses from the Rhineland are shown in different assemblies. The museum is operated by the Rhineland Regional Council.

General information

  • The "LVR-Freilichtmuseum Kommern - Rheinisches Landesmuseum für Volkskunde" presents example regions of the historical Rhineland in four assemblies. The focus is on the North Rhine-Westphalian part of the Rhineland. There are also temporary exhibitions and events. The Mechernich summer toboggan run is directly accessible.
  • You should plan at least three hours to visit the museum; you can stay on the site for 5 hours or more without any problems. The main circular route is 2.5 km long; the route is much longer if you visit the assemblies and houses.
  • The sales outlets are supported by a development association.

getting there

  • The main access is on the K 20 between the Mechernich districts of Eicks (2 km) and Kommern (1 km). The parking lot is chargeable (2.50 EUR).
  • From Mechernich there is a connection with a call line taxi (line 773). The line has a fixed timetable, but must first call (02441-99454545) or after this on-line be ordered.

  • April 1 to October 31, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • December 24th and 31st, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • January 1, December 25 and December 26, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • The "Handlung" and the bakery are not open during the entire opening time
  • The "Gastwirtschaft zur Post" does not offer the full range during the entire opening time.

Entrance fees (2015)

  • regular admission price 6.50 EUR
  • up to 18 years: free entry
  • reduced admission price EUR 4.50
  • Car drivers pay a parking fee of EUR 2.50

Barriers

The museum is partially handicapped accessible. Access for disabled people is not always optimally designed, so that disabled people may need additional help. Most buildings do not have wheelchair access to the upper floors.

  • The village of Kommern is 1 km away and the main town of Mechernich is around 3 km away.

shop

  • The museum shop at the main entrance is on duty during the opening hours of the ticket office, with specialties, gifts and books.
  • "Action" in the Westerwald / Middle Rhine assembly, with regional food specialties, ceramic items
  • The bakery (bread, crumble cake) in the store is not on duty during the entire opening time of the store. So you would have to shop there immediately and carry the goods around with you during the tour.
