History

Rhenen is a town with a fraught history. Because it was strategically located in the far east of the diocese of Utrecht in the past, it has been subjected to a lot of war violence over the centuries. In 1940 almost the entire city was destroyed by attacks. Even during the war, the city was rebuilt, but this was done in the old style. Although Rhenen looks old, the buildings are generally quite new. The Old Town Hall and the stately Cunera Church are the only old buildings that survived the war and can still be admired in their full glory today.
Literally and figuratively the highlight of Rhenen is this Cunerakerk. This church could be financed thanks to the many pilgrimages. Until the Reformation in 1580, Rhenen attracted an immense number of pilgrims, who went to the town to honor the Holy Cunera. The income from this early form of tourism guaranteed the financing of the 81.8 meter high Cuneratoren. The construction of this tower started in 1492 and took almost forty years; it was not completed until 1531.
