Richmond, Virginia is the capital of the American state Virginia. It is located on the James River, about 150 km upstream from its confluence with the Chesapeake Bay. The city has around 200,000 inhabitants. Together with the neighboring counties Henrico and Chesterfield More than 1,250,000 people live in the metropolitan area

Of the Indians who lived in the Richmond area when the Europeans arrived, Chief Powhatan is probably the most famous. His daughter was Pocahontas, * around 1595 in Virginia; † 1617 nearby London. The legend of the peaceful settlement by the Europeans goes back to them.
In 1607 began captain Christopher Newport with the exploration of the area, but it was not until 1644 after several attempts that he succeeded in establishing a trading post. He named the settlement Richmond to a London suburb. In 1742 Richmond received city rights. In 1788 it became the capital of Virginia.
