Introduction

A Alpine refuge (or Mountain retreat) is a building located in mountainous areas, usually far from inhabited centers, intended to accommodate mountaineers and hikers who frequent the mountains. It usually has basic hotel services: bathrooms, kitchens, bedrooms and dining rooms for food and lodging. The refuge is generally owned by the "Italian Alpine Club"and some of the"National Alpine Association ".

With the term bivouac on the other hand we mean an alpine refuge of reduced dimensions and functionality, almost exclusively for overnight stays or for protection from bad weather with at most other basic services of food and telecommunication.

Classification

The regulations of the Italian Alpine Club provide for the subdivision of the refuges into 5 categories:

CategoryDescription
TORefuges that can be reached by road or in the vicinity of this
B.Refuges accessible by other mechanical means of public service (excluding ski lifts) or in any case near this
C., D., ISRefuges not falling into the previous categories; belonging to one or the other of these categories is linked to the altitude of the shelter, the difficulty of access, and the method with which supplies are made. The category C. it can be further divided into sub-categories.
