To know
Riohacha is the capital of the department of The Guajra. It takes its name from the river that flows through it. The city was founded 1535 by Nikolaus Federmann and is often mentioned in the famous novel "One hundred years of solitude"of the 1981 Nobel Prize Gabriel García Márquez and also in the short story by the same author entitled "Chronicle of a death foretold".
Riohacha is an important port Colombian on the Caribbean Sea and a multicultural center. The area around the city is mostly desert and inhabited by Amerindians belonging to the Wayuu culture, already developed in pre-Columbian times. In colonial times Riochacha was famous for the abundance of pearls of the sea in front.

Seaside tourism takes place along the stretch of coastline that goes from the mouth of the Río Enea to that of the Río Ranchería with several virgin beaches and six urban beaches (Playa Marbella, Playa del Guapo, Playa del Muelle, Playa Gimaura "La Boca", Playa Valle de los Cangrejos and Playa La Raya), all with white sand fringed by coconut palms, along with the 1936 tourist pier.

It is located one block from the beach and the main square and about 15 minutes walk from the bus station. - 2 El Castillo del Mar. Great German owned hotel on the west side of the beach. Inside there is the tourist agency Kai Ecotravel, which offers various excursions including to La Guajira.
- 3 Patio Bonita House. Opened in 2013 by a Canadian expatriate and Colombian wife. The different rooms are located around a beautiful courtyard where breakfast is served. The owners organize excursions to La Guajira.
- Hotel International (In front of the market, 3 blocks east of the bus terminal, turn left immediately after the park). Wifi available in the reception areas.
