Risør is a small town on the Skagerrak, whose old town center, founded in 1723, with its many white-painted wooden houses, is one of the best-preserved of its kind in Europe. The hvite by ved Skagerrak, the white city on Skagerrak, as the place is also called, received the award for the most beautiful wooden city in the country in 1990, and is a very popular destination with tourists in the summer months when the sunlight makes the white city appear particularly bright.

The name of the place is derived from the island in front of the island Risøya derived what roughly Island with scrub means.

The municipality belonging to the place is located in the Fylke Aust-Agder and is made by the neighboring communes Tvedestrand, Vegårshei, Gjerstad and Kragerø limited.

history

Risør is one of the oldest towns in the region Sørlandet, as early as the 14th and 15th centuries, there was a timber handling point for the one in the north at this point Skienfrom where wood was shipped to the Netherlands. This loading point existed until 1630. When Kristiansand was founded in 1641, the residents of what is now Risør were supposed to move there, but they refused. As a result, Risør received town charter in 1723, its special feature was a large sailing fleet, which, however - today a rather inglorious legacy - was also used for pirate trips. The importance of the Risør sailing fleet (and, at the latest, of the pirate trips) ended with the beginning of steam shipping.

In 1861, 248 houses were completely burned in a large fire, 81 houses were saved. The time of the fire was "favorable" insofar as shipping had brought golden times for the city and the means were available to build new, befitting houses (today's patrician houses). In the course of this, the city was also redesigned, also with the desire to express the prosperity of the citizens: white was by far the most expensive color at the time, so white was chosen for the house painting.

The place experienced a significant turning point - as elsewhere - the time of the Second World War: As a seafaring town there were many casualties among the local seafarers, and many survivors had to struggle with long-term consequences. For these sailors was 1968 Convoy yen opened, a seamen's home, the name of which alludes to the convoy voyages in the Atlantic during World War II, on which these seamen had performed their service.

Overall, Risør has remained almost unchanged from the outside since the new buildings after the town fire from 1861 until today, even the concrete construction phase of the 1960s passed the town - this time due to a bad economic situation. Today the city can proudly refer to the status of one of the most beautiful, completely preserved wooden house cities in Norway, large parts of the city are under monument protection.
