Rocroi is a town in the department of Ardennes situated at 30 km of Charleville-Mezieres in France.
Understand
Geography
Rocroi is located in the north-west of the Ardennes department, less than 3 kilometers from the Franco-Belgian border. The nearest Belgian town of Rocroi is Couvin, which is 17 kilometers away. Revin is 12 kilometers away, Fumay and Haybes 18 kilometers away, and Charleville-Mezieres 30 kilometers away.
The village is located on the plateau that bears its name. This being one of the highest places in the department, the outside temperature and the weather will be affected: in winter, it is not uncommon for it to snow in Rocroi while Charleville-Mezieres will not see a single snowflake fall ...
Story
The informed historian will inevitably make the link between Rocroi, and the famous battle of 1643, seeing the victory of the French royal armies led by led by the Duke of Enghien (future Grand Condé), facing the Spaniards who besieged the city. Others will remember the city's fortifications that many believe were designed by Vauban ...
But Rocroi is much more than that. The first mention of the city dates back to the end of the XIIe century, when Nicolas IV, Lord of Rumigny, had a chapel built on what were only swamps swept by all the winds. The first houses were built immediately. A few years later, Raul (or Raoul) I, inherited these lands, and had a fortified house built in order to protect the place. From there to saying that this character is at the origin of the name of the town, there is only a step that some historians have taken, without however determining for sure which is the right version: for some, the the fact that the city is growing rapidly (Rault-Believes) could be a plausible explanation. For others, the fact that the municipality is at the crossroads leading to Cork and at Thiérache on one side, Porcien and Hainaut on the other, could be the origin of the name (Rault-Croix).
Already at that time, the inhabitants set up a moat surrounding the city as well as an earthen rampart, which did not prevent Rocroi, like all the border towns of the time, from paying a heavy price to the war.
François 1er, well aware that the danger can come mainly from these northeastern borders, orders that we find the best place to build a fort. Since Charles Quint chose the city of Givet to build the Fort de Charlemont, it will be in Rocroi that fortifications will be designed from 1552, under the reign of Henri II. It was at this time that Rocroi became “Rocroy” (ie the Roc du Roy), making it appear that the town was named in honor of the King of France.
These fortifications will fulfill their role to perfection when in 1643, the Spaniards besiege the city. As the reign of young Louis XIV had barely begun, the kingdom of France was in danger. This is without counting the genius of the Duke of Enghien, who, on May 19, will take the Spanish cavalry in reverse and make them beat a retreat, then launches his infantry in front of the enemy. Although the Spaniards are outnumbered, they are defeated within hours.
The fortifications were improved by Vauban a few years later, and embellished with an arsenal at the end of the XVIIe century.
During the revolution, Rocroi changed its name: thinking that the origin of the name of the city actually came from the belief created from nothing during the creation of the fortifications, the revolutionaries named the city “Roc-Libre”.
The fortifications were further improved during the XIXe century, but following the improvement of the artillery, these became obsolete and were decommissioned in 1889. They were however classified Historical Monuments from 1935.
Rocroi was sub-prefecture of Ardennes until 1926.
