Rosh Pina (or Rosh Pinna; Hebrew רֹאשׁ פִּנָּה) is a place in Upper Galilee North of Israel.

Historical view

Rosh Pina is a small town on the slope of Mount Kna'an near Safed is located; is predominantly agricultural, but is also known for its artists.

After some Jews from the near Safed Gei Oni founded the settlement here in 1878, but it perished after a few years due to illnesses and agricultural failures. In 1882 thirty Romanian immigrant families established the settlement here Rosh Pina, which even after the first failure is still one of the oldest Zionist settlements in Upper Galilee, until then the pious Jews lived only in the old Jewish communities of Safed and Tiberias. The agriculturally oriented settlement was financially supported by Baron Rothschild from 1883, the settlers were able to buy the land from the Muslims from the neighboring Arab village of Al-Ja'una and lived peaceful coexistence.

In 1922 the village had 468 inhabitants; coexistence was lived until 1948, until the turmoil surrounding the attack Safed the Arab population was evacuated and the last Arab inhabitants were driven out by Israeli troops.

After the War of Independence, agriculture continues to be particularly at the level of the Hule in the foreground, the place is popular as a quiet residential area and attracts visitors with its various artist studios. 1906 got wilder here Emmer (Triticum dicoccoides) discovered, a grain that is considered a preform of wheat and was cultivated in the Middle East in ancient times.

By plane

The 1 Rosh Pina Airport or Ben Ya'akov Airport is located on the Hule Plain near Mahanaim and was built in 1943 under the British Mandate and later used by the Israeli Air Force. After an expansion and a phase of temporary closure as part of the testing of drones, a limited one will be inner-Israeli traffic with connections to Tel Aviv Sde Dov. The airport cannot be used to travel from abroad.

By train / bus

Upper Galilee is not accessible by rail, there is a local bus service to the neighboring communities of Hatz HaGalilit and Mahanayim; Long-distance buses from Tiberias, Tel Aviv and Haifa serve the Rosh Pina Junction stop approximately every hour.

In the street

  • the old town center around the 1 HaRishonim Street dates back to the pioneering days, the stone houses were built with the support of Baron Rothschild. The old 2 synagogue has since been restored.
  • from 3 Nimrod Lookout there is a great panoramic view of the Upper Galilee and the Hule plain. A memorial was erected here in memory of local soldiers who were killed in an attack on their armored vehicle during the Lebanon War.
  • the two-story one built from black basalt stone 4 American House is one of the last signs of the Arab village of Al-Ja'una and was built by a wealthy Arab who lived in America.
