It is a post-glacial channel lake that runs through the Johannesburg Heath meanders. The lake is very narrow and very long with numerous bays, islands and peninsulas.

The lake is by the Jeglinner Canal with Lake Sexter, a southern bay of the Spirdingsees, and thus connected to the other large Masurian lakes, resulting in a sailing and kayaking area hundreds of kilometers in size.
