Rostov-on-Don is a city ofRostov Oblast in Russia.
To know
Rostov-on-Don is the largest city and the center of southern Russia, as well as the 10th most populous city in Russia.
Geographical notes
It is located near the mouth of the Don River and a short distance from the Sea of Azov which in turn is linked to the Black Sea.
When to go
The climate of the city has many differences according to the seasons. If in winter the temperatures are very cold, in summer they become very hot with peaks of even 40 ° C. The best months to go are undoubtedly the mid-seasons.
Background
The city arose around 1750 as a settlement of merchants and for this reason it was called Kupecheskaya (settlement of merchants). In the 19th century the city was called the "Chicago of Russia" due to its economic and industrial expansion, becoming one of the five most important cities in Russia. In 1930 Rostov and Nakhichevan become a single administrative entity.
During the Second World War the city suffered the Nazi occupation and the destruction of buildings as well as the death of 40,000 civilians. In the post-war period, the city of was raised through a process of reconstruction looking with important prospects to the future also linked to its increase in population.
In 2018 it hosted some matches of the FIFA World Cup.
How to orient yourself
The city develops along the Don River, a true geographical reference. The city center is included along the pedestrian path of the 1 Pushkinskaya ulitsa that from park of the Revolution, that is, where the Rostov Drama Theater is located, it reaches the Central Station. There theater square (where the dramatic theater is located) faces the monument to the liberators of the Patriotic War, considered the heart of the city, at the center of the most important events.
The city is connected to the opposite bank of the Don by bridges:

Traffic is heavy at rush hour. In many parts, parking is subject to a metered charge.
What see
- 1 Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin, ul. Stanislavskogo, 58, ☎ 7 863 210-19-00. It is the cathedral of the diocese of Rostov. The church was built between 1854 and 1860, while the bell tower between 1875 and 1887. In Soviet times it lost its function and became a warehouse. In 1942 the bell tower was blown up, followed by a restoration that led to the opening on 21 September 1999 on the occasion of the 250th birthday of the city of Rostov. For the occasion it was consecrated by the Patriarch of Moscow Alexy II.
- 2 Monument to the Liberators, Teatralnaya pl. Monument dedicated to the liberators of the city from Nazi oppression during the Second World War was erected in 1982. On top of the 72 m high column there is a statue of the goddess Nike. Here the annual celebrations are celebrated in memory of the victory in the Great Patriotic War or the Second World War.

- 3 Zmievskaya Balka Memorial Complex (Змиевская Балка Мемориальный Комплекс), Zmiyevskiy pr-d, 1.
10:00-14:00. This complex recalls the massacre of 27,000 people carried out in 1942 by the Nazis in that very place. There is also a small museum on site. It is located on the outskirts and to reach it it is easier to take a taxi.
- 4 Church of the Resurrection (Церковь Святого Воскресения). Armenian church completed in 2011.

- 5 Rostov synagogue, Gazetnyy Pereulok, 18/68, ☎ 7 863 262-47-59. This synagogue was built in 1872 thanks to grants from the industrialist I.M. Yelitser according to an art nouveau style and with oriental elements. In 1935 it was closed and transformed into a chemical factory. The building returned to the Jewish community in 1999 and completed in 2005.
- 6 Church of the Last Supper (Церковь Тайной Вечери). This church consecrated in 2004 stands on a previous church which was later demolished. Masses are celebrated in Russian, Polish, Spanish and English.

- 3 Maxim Gorky Drama Theater (Rostovskiy Akademicheskiy Teatr Dramy Im. M.gor'kogo), Teatral'naya Ploshchad ', 1. The style of this theater was reproduced in two others, one a London (next to the Cathedral of San Basilio) and the other a Osaka. It opened in 1934 but was damaged by the bombing of the Second World War. It was restored and reopened only in 1963 and today it is an important cultural reference for the city.

Many secondary roads, even in the city center, have poor lighting, if not in several cases almost completely absent. Even in Gorky Park many parts of it are in the shade or in the dark. Being Rostov a city known for the presence of crime throughout Russia (the Rostov mafia) it is always advisable to use the utmost caution especially in the evening.

On the site there are also reconstructions of a hut and a model of the fortifications. The ticket varies according to what you want to visit, whether only the site or even the museums.
- There are few public transport to reach it, however there is the train that stops right in the Tanais station. However, the timetables must be considered because the frequency of trains is not always very favorable.
