Rouen is a port city on the Seine, located in the north-west of France. The city belongs to the region Normandywhose capital it is. The city was badly damaged in World War II and rebuilt in the 1950s and is now a modern city. It is still worth a visit because of its cathedral.

background

The history of Rouen is particularly linked to the person of Joan of Arc (Joan of Arc). The young woman, who said she had visions of saints and - quite unusual for a woman at the time - had fought against the English in the Hundred Years War, fell into the hands of her enemies in May 1430, who handed her over to the Catholic courts in Rouen. She was interrogated and sentenced in the local donjon (defense tower). Finally, on May 30, 1431, she was burned at a stake in the market square of Rouen. Numerous places in the city commemorate the national heroine and saint.

getting there

By plane

The closest international airports are the two Paris airports Charles de Gaulle and Orly (140 and 145 km southeast) and Beauvais (85 km east). There are numerous direct connections from German-speaking countries to the first two, the latter is used by low-cost lines such as Ryanair, but there are currently no direct flights from D / A / CH. From Orly airport you can get to Rouen in 1:40 hours by car with smooth traffic, from CDG in just under two hours; by train from CDG in a good two to 2½ hours, from Orly in 2½ to three hours (two changes each time).

The small airport is located about 90 km west of Rouen Deauville, to which there are only a few scheduled flights.

By train

The main train station (Gare de Rouen Rive-Droite) has an unusual reception hall that is well worth seeing

ICs leave Paris Saint-Lazare train station every two hours directly to Rouen, they take about 1:10 hours. Also every two hours (staggered) there are ICs with several stops to Rouen, which take just under 1½ hours. The ticket costs € 24. During rush hour every hour, otherwise every two hours IC travel between Le Havre and Rouen, the journey takes one hour. Regional express trains (TER) run from Dieppe to Rouen approximately every hour; they take between three quarters of an hour and a good hour. TERs run seven times a day between Caen and Rouen, which take around 1:45 hours, and are supplemented by regional buses, which take around the same time. TER operate four times a day between Amiens and Rouen, the journey time is around 1:15 hours.

Connections from German-speaking countries usually go via Paris, whereby the train station has to be changed (from Gare du Nord or d'Est to Gare Saint-Lazare). The fastest connection from Cologne to Rouen, for example, takes 5:15 hours and from Frankfurt am Main six hours.

By bus

Ouibus, the SNCF ferry service, runs several times a day from Paris-Bercy via La Défense to Rouen. From Bercy the journey takes 2:40 hours, from La Défense 1:35 hours. The single journey costs € 7.

In the street

From the greater Paris area, the A 13 motorway leads directly to Rouen. The A 28 from Amiens / Calais leads here from the north-east; from Caen and Le Havre the A 13; from Le Mans the A 28; the A 150 from the north towards the Channel coast.

From the northern and central parts of Germany you drive through Belgium (past Liège and Amiens). From Cologne, for example, it is 520 kilometers, for which you have to plan a good five hours of pure travel time. If you are coming from southern Germany, you should drive around the greater Paris area and take the A 26 from Reims past Amiens. Only from the extreme south-west of Germany and Switzerland cannot sensibly avoid driving over the Paris motorway ring.

By boat

The closest ferry ports to / from England are Dieppe and Le Havre.
