Rouwas Gorge - Rouwas-Schlucht

The Rouwas Gorge about 55 km southwest of Heraklion on Crete near Zaros is not nearly as touristic as the Samaria or Imbross Gorge.

Hike

The hike is relatively challenging but no alpine experience is required. Sturdy hiking shoes are useful, but you can also wear proper hiking sandals. The gorge is attractive because of the few tourists who make this tour. Occasionally you don't meet anyone else for 30 minutes. The way can be done in about 2.5 hours (without breaks). Back then another 1.5 hours. You should allow for at least 5-6 hours with breaks.

The way

In Zaros you drive towards Idi Hotel (also trout farm). From there, you can continue to drive to the Quellsee by car or you can already walk. There are two taverns at the source lake, which invite you to refresh yourself and a delicious meal before or after the hike. Attention, there is no possibility to buy food or water on the way, so take enough with you.

The hike goes left along the source lake and is well signposted by Greek standards. After the first gate (against the free movement of the goats, so it is essential to close it again), however, a note is missing. Turn left towards the monastery of Agios Nikolaos. Shortly before the monastery you cross the river bed, which has dried up in summer.

You now follow the yellow and red markings and occasionally cross the river bed. After approx. 2 km you reach a road (gravel path), which you follow to turn right after approx. 200 m and continue uphill on a steep path.

Those who follow the approx. 5.2 km to the little church of Agios Ioanis have a shady spot with a few benches and a spring where you can refill your drinks bottles. The last kilometer up to then leads through a light forest along the stream bed, which is already carrying water up here. This path alone is worth the strain.

organization

I am not aware of any tour operator who organizes this tour. But since the tour leads back to the starting point, you can also do it yourself with a rental car.

trips

The taverns at the source lake are recommended.
