Rügen - the largest island German and Pomerania, located in the south-western part of the Baltic Sea. Administratively, it belongs entirely to the district of Vorpommern-Rügen

Geography
The area of the island is 926 km², the highest point (161 m above sea level) is Piekberg on the Jasmund peninsula. Rügen is strongly fragmented with numerous bays (the largest and deepest Jasmunda in the north of the island and the Tromper Age), peninsulas (the largest: Jasmund, Wittow in the north, and Zudar and Mönchgut in the south), islets (including Hiddensee, Ummanz), and it is separated from the mainland by a narrow strait of Strelasund (t. Strela), over which a road and railway bridge (Rügendamm) has been thrown. Currently, a new motorway bridge is built next to it. There are numerous holiday and spa resorts on Rügen. The most numerous town on the island is situated on the north-eastern coast, on the bay of Prorer Wiecz, Sassnitz. A few kilometers south of the city, in Neu Mukran, there is a ferry terminal providing a sea connection with the Scandinavian countries.
North of Sassnitz, on the Cretaceous Jasmund Peninsula, is the Jasmund National Park with cliff formations, incl. Wissower Klinken, the Stubbenkammer and the Königsstuhl exhibition and education center. The numerous bays of the western part of the island, including the coastal strip, including the neighboring island of Hiddensee and the mainland (Vorpommern-) peninsula of Darß, are part of another national park - the "Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft". Another protected area on Rügen is the Rügen Nature Park, which covers most of the island, excluding a small part of its interior, and the south-eastern Mönchgut peninsula, where the Südost-Rügen biosphere reserve has been established (and on the island of Vilm).
