Ružomberok (Slovak: Ružomberok) - a district town in the central one Slovakia, in Žilina country, in the historical region of Liptov.

Characteristic

The city lies at the crossroads of historical and current trade routes. Historically, it was part of Likawa - a neighboring village.

It is similar in nature to other cities in the region (such as Liptovsky Mikulas or Martin). The main employer in the city is Mondi SCP, a paper manufacturing / converting company. One of the largest Slovak universities - "Katolícka univerzita" also operates in the city.

Drive

By plane

The nearest airport is the airport in Žilina.

By rail

The railway line from Poprad down Zilina.

  • 1 Railway station

By car

Two important Slovak national roads intersect in Ruzomberok: No. 59 (R3 / international route E77) from the border crossing Chyżne - Trzciana to Banska Bystrzyca and No. 18 (future highway D1 / E50) from Žilina to Presov.

By bus

Next to the station, there is also a bus station with intercity and interstate buses.

Communication

The private car is the most common mode of transportation, but the city has a public bus network that runs at 1/2-1 hour intervals on the most popular routes. Buses also run to nearby villages, mainly from the main station. Taxis run mainly from the bus station and to the city center (at Hotel Kultúra).

Apart from a few hilly parts (Klačno, Baničné, around the cemetery), most of the city can be easily reached by bike in ~ 20 minutes. The city center can also be easily reached on foot, 30 minutes should be enough in most cases.

Worth seeing

Vlkolínec
Likava Castle
  • 1 Vlkolínec (Turn off road 59 past the restaurant "Vlčí dvor" and then follow the signs towards the valley.). One of the few folk villages to survive intact in Central Europe and is nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Vlkolínec is famous for its folk architecture. Two of the 45 houses can be visited from the inside, and there is a small art gallery, church, and cemetery. The village can only be reached by car (private or taxi). The village is closed to vehicles, but free parking is available.
  • 2 Andrej Hlinek Square A relaxing, picturesque and quiet square on a small hill in the city center
  • 3 Likava Castle A partially reconstructed castle in a nearby town Likavka. Formerly it was a protection point, it was destroyed and remained in ruins. However, some parts of it have been renovated and there are few historical exhibitions. The best way to visit the castle is to start from "Pod Hradom" street in Likavka (information center available) and go up the hill on foot. The path is relatively short, but a refreshing walk through the forest and / or meadow. There are various events at different times of the year under the castle - for example, historical battle reconstructions.
  • 4 St. Andrew
  • 5 Liptov Museum (Near the Kultúra hotel). A museum with mainly permanent exhibitions showing the history of the Liptov region and nature. In addition, several thematic exhibitions are on display.
  • 6 Ľudovíta Fullu's gallery, Dušana Makovického 1 (In the vicinity of Liptovské Múzeum). A gallery containing the art of a Slovak painter, one of the most important figures in Slovak creative art of the 20th century.
  • City center with shops and several parks
  • Havránok History Museum, showing the history of the ancient Celtic settlements in the region.
