The Selous Game Reserve is a reserve of Tanzania.

Understand

The Selous Game Reserve is divided by the Rufiji River. The northern part is reserved for photo safaris; the south for the hunting blocks of the specialized companies.

It is one of the largest protected areas in the world and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1982. A border, which leaves out a uranium deposit, was approved in 2012.

The reserve owes its name to a hunter, Captain Frederick Courtney Selous, an English officer from the beginning of the 20th century.

The park is home to zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes and elephants. There are still a few specimens of the protected black rhino, and groups of rare wild dogs and antelopes.

TAZARA train crossing the Selous reserve

To the north of the reserve passes the TAZARA railway connecting Tanzania and the Zambia. Trains from Dar es Salaam goes there twice a week. The reserve stations are located at Kinyanguru, Fuga and Matambwe. The cheapest way to get there is by train, the fare for first class is around 10 $, but at the same time the visit of the reserve is more difficult and less comfortable.

Circulate

The Selous reserve is an isolated region far removed from the main roads. It is possible to get to the reserve in the dry season and (with great difficulty) in the rainy season, but the road is long and difficult. Most visitors get there via one of the many airstrips. Many lodges in the northern photographic zone offer a game package service, which includes trips, safaris, walks and boat trips on the Rufiji River.
