Rübeland is a district of the city Upper Harz on the Brocken in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt and since 2004 has had the additional name "Höhlenort". The place is in the Bodetal in the south extends the Rappbodetalsperre.

background

The place, first mentioned in 1320, has a long mining tradition. Iron ore works were located here and slate was mined.

In 1536 the local Baumannshöhle was allegedly rediscovered by the miner Friedrich Baumann. However, it is a story made up during the Nazi era in order to come up with a suitable anniversary date.

In 2004, Rübeland became a unified community Elbingerode (Harz) incorporated. The place Rübetal itself consists of the districts Neuwerk, Kaltes Tal, Susenburg and Kreuztal.

Tourist Attractions

Show caves

The main attractions of the place are its two show caves.

1  Baumannshöhle. Germany's oldest show cave. After a fictional saga the limestone cave was discovered in 1536 by the miner Friedrich Baumann. The finds include animal bones, the most important of which are those of the cave bear. A large hall, the Goethesaal - Goethe was one of the earliest visitors to the cave - is used for performances by the ensemble of the Harz mountain theater. In the 2 km long cave 600 m have been made accessible to the visitor.

2  Hermannshöhle. In the approximately 2700 m long cave, visitors can see the stalactites along a 800 m path. The cave was only discovered during road construction in 1866. It was named after its researcher Hermann Grotrian. A few specimens of the grotto olm still live in the cave lake. As of April 22, 2015.
