The Capivari River valley was colonized by immigrants from different regions of the Germany, mainly from Westphalia. arrived at the port of Florianopolis around 1864 and established themselves on the mainland, on the banks of the Cubatão River, around the town of Teresópolis. A little later, they discovered the sources of the Capivari River and started the colonization of its valley, giving rise to the current municipalities of Saint Boniface, Saint Martin and Storage.
The Municipality of São Martinho was created in 1962 and is composed of several locations: the Headquarters (formerly Praia Redonda), Vargem do Cedro, Alto São Martinho, Gabiroba, Rio São João, etc. The municipality currently has about 3200 inhabitants. Its economy is traditionally based on diversified family farming. In recent years, there has been the development of other sectors such as industry, tourism and, as a result, the strengthening of trade.

Located 45 km north of the city of shark and 25 km from Gravatal, the seat of the municipality has access by paved road.

- Cristo-Rei Mother Church, at the county seat. This church was designed by Fr. Gabriel Lux and inaugurated on November 16, 1940.
