Florianópolis - Florianópolis

Florianópolis center.

Florianopolis is the capital of Santa Catarina, at South region of Brazil.

Understand

The city of Florianópolis has around 100 beaches, which are also considered to be continental. The beauty of this great diversity of beaches, mountains and Atlantic forest attract thousands of tourists throughout the year, especially during the summer, making it the 2nd most visited Brazilian city by foreign tourists (only behind Rio de Janeiro).

In addition to vacation tourism, Florianópolis also attracts tourists for business, cultural, artistic, sporting, professional, symposium and conference events, which highlights the city as an important venue for national and international events.

Although part of the city is located on the mainland, most of the attractions of Florianópolis are on the island of Santa Catarina, which earned it the title of Magic Island. The city's name is also lovingly abbreviated to Floripa by many Brazilians.

Florianópolis is vibrant. Full of nightlife, it has numerous options for night owls, from the most popular to the most alternative. In Lagoa da Conceição and in the north of the island, the city's nightlife is concentrated; the first, more famous for its various bars and nightclubs, the second, for its parties, especially in the sophisticated neighborhood of Jurerê Internacional.

The city's hills are covered by tropical vegetation cut by hundreds of small waterfalls and streams. There are several ecological trails around the city with a low level of difficulty, which constitutes an option for outdoor leisure.

History

It was founded on March 23, 1726 with the name of Nossa Senhora do Desterro in reference to its patron saint and later simply Desterro. Later the name Florianópolis was given in honor of Floriano Peixoto, former president of Brazil in the Old Republic (1891-1894). As Floriano Peixoto is a military active in the repression and execution of the defeated of the Federalist Revolution, who were arrested and shot in the fortress of Anhatomirim, this name was rejected by many city dwellers influenced by the feelings of those monarchists' relatives, many from traditional families in the city. For this reason they continued to use the name Desterro. Until recently, some prominent figures in the city still refused to use the name Florianópolis.

geography

Florianópolis is located in the smallest state in the southern region, Santa Catarina. The city extends over 675,409km² and has a population of around 453,285 inhabitants in 2013 and is located at sea level.

Santa Catarina Island has a very rugged geography, with many hills, plains, inlets, dunes and lakes. The two largest lakes are Lagoa da Conceição and Lagoa do Peri, the first being a brackish water lagoon and the second a freshwater lake.

At three points the island approaches the mainland, in the extreme south, in the middle and in the north. This forms two bays - the North and South bays - very wide with calm and warm waters where the internationally famous Florianópolis oysters are grown.

Around the island there are dozens of smaller islands, the most famous being the Ilha do Arvoredo, a biological reserve with restricted access, the island of Anhatomirim, with its magnificent 18th-century fortress, and the Ilha do Campeche, famous for its rock inscriptions and water crystal clear like a Caribbean spa. Some of these islands that surround Santa Catarina are private, and in one of them there is an inn.

There are two large sets of dunes on the island, the most famous of which are the Joaquina dunes, between Joaquina beach and Lagoa da Conceição. These dunes are composed of fine and white sand, being several meters high. Then the sandboard.

International Social and Environmental Certificate

Florianópolis is among the few Brazilian cities to have the certification, better known as Blue Flag or Blue Flag, issued by the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education), given to destinations that meet criteria in the areas of environmental education, information and safety signs for users and water quality and coastal environment.

The certification is renewed annually, where a national and international jury carry out a new evaluation of the beach. The Ministry of Tourism of Brazil is part of this jury. In the 2017/2018 season, Lagoa do Peri received the Blue Flag.

"Gay-Friendly" City

The beautiful Florianópolis has become one of the most popular destinations for gays and lesbians. The city is in 2nd place of Brazilian destinations preferred by the LGBT public and has several points and parties aimed at the gay public. Its reputation as a sympathetic capital began about 15 years ago, when the city promoted the first Pop Gay, a costume contest for female dancers in a public square in the center of the city. The event grew and in 2008 received more than 50 thousand spectators. The official tourism agency of the State of Santa Catarina, and the private initiative have been working with the aim of promoting the city to the gay public with high purchasing power.

The country's big clubs and promoters are making parties and pool parties, bringing more and more the LGBT public, in Carnival the big parties are already remarkable such as South Beats, E-joy by The Week, New Pool Party The Week, Sunrise Party by Yacht Casablanca, Babylon - Official Party of The Week/SP and Troy. The LGBT houses in Floripa also appeal to the most different tastes, with their big parties, all year round: Concorde Club, Mix Café, La Luna Club, Floribar and there are other houses that open only in season.

Daily
