Brasilia is the capital of Brazil and lies in the Central-West region of the country in Brazilian mountain country (Planalto Central or Brasileiro) surrounded by Cerrado. The modern city, strictly planned on the drawing board, today has around 2.8 million inhabitants and is therefore significantly smaller than the metropolises Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The city center has belonged to the since 1987 UNESCO world cultural heritage.

Most of the middle and upper classes live in the center of the city. Most of the sights are also located there. Simple workers mostly live in the satellite cities. These are connected by bus routes that have a different color depending on the satellite city; the residential areas are Asa Norte, Asa Sul and Vila Planalto.
background
The decision to found a new capital was taken as early as 1922, when the foundation stone was laid on a site in the central high plateau. However, the legal basis for the construction was only created by President Juscelino Kubitschek, who on April 20, 1956, sent the so-called "Message of Anapolis" to the legislature and the Senate, which then approved the Brasília project as the new capital of Brazil. As an urban planner was Lúcio Costa hired the star architect Oscar Niemeyer was responsible for the planning of the public buildings. As a result, the city does not appear to have grown naturally, but rather like an architectural study from the 1950s.
It was Costa who designed the city in the shape of a large bird with open wings in such a way that the city layout is crossed by two traffic axes that meet in the center:
- the Monumental Axis (Eixo Monumental) with the government buildings and monuments
- Road axis (Eixo Rodoviário) along which the residential and commercial areas of the city are located.
Lake Paranoá was created both as a recreational area and to alleviate the prevailing dry climate.
